SummaryThis 10-credit course allows students to develop a deeper level of knowledge and understanding in the speciality area of renal medicine, and covers topics such as presentation and investigation of renal disease, how some important systemic diseases impact on the kidney, and renal transplant surgery.
Course description Individual speciality tutors will use increasingly complex clinical case studies to broaden knowledge. They will guide students to appropriate seminal publications in their speciality and encourage them to present and review recent journal article in a group setting (online journal club). Online publication review forms will also be used to assess of literature evaluation skills. Historically important, controversial, topical and novel papers will be discussed. Students¿ writing skills will also be enhanced through the formative assessments (a case report or review article), which should contain an appropriate review of the literature in their specialist area. Students will be encouraged to publish these pieces of work where possible.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the basic science underpinning the causes of and clinical presentation of common renal diseases
  2. Diagnose and formulate management plans for common renal conditions seen in acute/internal medicine
  3. Critically assess medical research in order to identity its strengths, weaknesses and how it might be applied in renal medicine
  4. Apply critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis to produce a short article on a renal medicine-related topic
  5. Appraise the impact of common systemic conditions in the development of renal pathology
