| Additional Information (Assessment) |
During week 1 of their final year students must submit a 1,000 word outline of their dissertation. As a minimum, this should include details of the topic and the research question to be made; a summary of current literature on the topic and an indicative bibliography; a chapter-by-chapter outline; and details of any practical issues related to the research that have been identified.
The final assessment takes place at the end of the fourth year with the submission of a 10,000 word dissertation (see IMES Dissertation (part 2)). |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify primary and secondary source materials relevant to the development of a research topic;
- Describe and assess alternative methodological approaches for pursuing research in that topic;
- Recognise gaps in the extant secondary literature relating to both sources and methodological approaches;
- Use analytical and organisational skills to develop a plan for an extended research project;
- Further develop abilities in such transferable skills as close, and critical evaluation of the relevant sources, wide reading, time-management, all with some supervision.
