This course offers a critical examination of the encounter between the Zionist movement and the local population in Palestine, from its beginnings in the late Ottoman period until the present day. We will explore the changing relationship between these two agents and chart it as we cover the impact and legacy of the British mandate, the critical events of 1948 and 1967 that respectively saw the establishment and consolidation of the state of Israel and the continuing dispossession of the Palestinians, and the ongoing attempts to contrive a political solution. We will do this by investigating primary sources and secondary scholarship, both in text and audio-visual media, to analyse the terrain of a deeply politicised historiography that has been responsible for the established narrative and sought to critique it. Taught in conjunction with the Undergraduate Honours option, there will be additional PG-only classes.
