SummaryThis elective aims to provide an advanced immunological understanding of malaria, arguably the most important parasitic infection of mankind and an outstanding challenge to practical immunology. The emphasis will be on human malaria, though animal models will be considered when appropriate to current hypotheses of immunity and/or pathogenesis.
Course description The course begins with an overview of the basic biology of Plasmodium parasites and an outline of various experimental models used in malaria immuno-biology studies. The clinical spectrum of malaria in humans will be explored, followed by a description of the host-parasite interactions that contribute to malaria pathology. Co-infections will also be considered, and specific immunological and pathological aspects of malarial anaemia. Several sessions will examine immune mechanisms (innate and acquired) that can mediate protection against malaria, as well as the immunological pathways contributing to pathology. Finally, we shall examine current malaria vaccine candidates and their mechanisms of protection, and consider whether the current roll-out of the first WHO-approved malaria vaccine RTS,S is justified.
