SummaryExperimental Immunology covers central aspects of experimental design, analysis, and interpretation of results, as well as important immunological experimental techniques. It provides a foundation for Senior Immunology Honours students in reading and critiquing scientific literature and so feeds into the other Immunology core courses and electives. The experimental design, analysis and interpretation aspects provide a foundation for the Research project in Semester 2
Course description The course introduces students to experimental design and statistical analysis. It covers commonly used techniques, such as ELISA, in vivo adoptive transfer, flow cytometry and cell sorting (FACS), and bioinformatics. Background on standard immunological techniques is provided. Flow cytometry and bioinformatic analysis are reinforced through hands-on data analysis workshops. This is complemented with tutorials based around the reading, analysis, and discussion of primary scientific papers. Students build upon the knowledge gained and work in groups to virtually design and analyse a follow-on experiment to one of the tutorial papers, so reinforcing experimental design, understanding of immunological techniques, and statistical analysis.

Co-requisites Students MUST also take: Immunology Research Project (IMMU10014) AND Molecular and Cellular Immunology (IMMU10016)

Four assessments based on workshop topics 10% each (8 credits in total).
Class Test 60% (12 credits).
Feedback Instructors will provide feedback directly to students working in groups during workshops. Feedback will be given (by instructors and from peers) for presentations taking place as part of the workshop assessments.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. A critical understanding of experimental techniques and approaches used in immunological research.
  2. Attainment of advanced skills in reading, understanding, and critiquing primary literature.
  3. The ability to develop scientific questions and hypotheses, design experiments to test hypotheses, manipulate, interpret, and analyse experimental data, and relate conclusions to the wider field.
  4. Communicate research approaches and conclusions clearly.
