SummaryThe aim of this course is to develop generic research and / or practical skills that can be deployed in academic or commercial environments. Students will demonstrate their ability to develop interesting concepts and / or hypotheses into proposals appropriate for a larger research- or implementation-based project. They will also demonstrate their ability to identify and manage relevant legal, social, ethical and professional issues.
Course description This course is tightly aligned with the subject of the Informatics Dissertation. The structure and delivery of this course will vary according to the nature of the project/dissertation and will be agreed between student and their supervisor at the start of the semester. Representative activities might include a critical literature review, data preparation, preliminary implementation, or establishing connections and gathering requirements from stakeholders. The student will then produce a project proposal that explains / discusses relevant literature, explores / develops the hypotheses or goals of the project. Students will develop a project management plan including appropriate milestones and approximate times with some justification for these decisions.

Core concepts in project planning will be delivered through a mix of focussed lectures, on-line content and group tutorials. These groups will sometimes be arranged by degree programme to cover specific topics only relevant to that programme. Additional support and feedback will come from the Dissertation supervisor who will be appointed towards the start of the course.
