| Course description |
The course helps students explore a variety of topics related to word formation in a structured way. We will come up together with a detailed overview of the issues involved in the study of complex words, with an emphasis on how morphology interacts with other components of the grammar (phonology, syntax, semanatics, but also acquisition and processing). The general outlook will be a formal theoretical one, but no particular conception of morphology will be singled out to the exclusion of discussion of others. A main aim of the course is in fact to show how one can arrive from a particular data set at different possible analyses of these data, which may each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Students will submit exercises and self-reflections after each class, a mid-semester self-evaluation at the mid-semester point, a group project towards the end of the semester, and a final self-evaluation.
We want to evaluate:
¿ What we've learned and how we've grown (portfolio: reflections)
¿ How well we've learned the skills (portfolio: exercises)
¿ How we can apply the new knowledge (project)
Accordingly, self-assessment will rely on the following:
¿ Portfolio (Learn Journal) with self-reflection and answers to exercises
¿ Self-evaluations at midterm and end of semester
¿ Group project
Working in pairs or small groups on the exercises will be permitted (and encouraged).
Students give themselves marks at the end of the course, based on their self assessment. The instructor reserves the right to change these. |
