| Summary | The course offers a general survey on the topic of multimodality. It explores how multimodality is being-tackled across different branches of linguistics, such as sign language linguistics, psycholinguistics, cognitive linguistics, language evolution, discourse analysis and sociolinguistics. By exploring this topic, the students will also develop critical academic literacy in different subfields of linguistics. |
| Course description |
It is truth universally acknowledged that linguistics is the scientific study of language. However, there is a growing interest in multimodal language phenomena such as sign languages as well as embodied and visual modes of communication such as gestures and emojis! The study of multimodality (or multimodal language) is pushing a new wave of methodological and theoretical innovations in linguistics. This course offers an introduction to multimodality, exploring how it is being tackled in different branches of linguistics.
The course surveys a broad range of topics in multimodality research, including sign languages, co-speech gestures, embodiment, comics, emojis, photography and music.
By engaging with the topic of multimodality, the student will also have the opportunity to develop critical academic literacy skills and explore linguistic software such as Elan.
