SummaryThe course aims to provide students with insight into the role of the environmental and/or renewable energy lawyer and the scope of environmental law and renewable energy law in Scotland. The course also covers UK, European and international aspects where relevant. The course considers key substantive environmental issues, components of environmental and renewable energy legal practice, and has a focus on essential skills to be an effective environmental lawyer and to work as a lawyer in the field of renewable energy.
Course description On completion of the course the student should be able to:

- understand in greater detail key environmental issues including climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution;
- understand the role of an environmental lawyer, the policy frameworks and the scope of environmental law in Scotland;
- analyse and discuss environmental issues both in Scotland and globally;
- understand the law and policy surrounding renewable energy in Scotland;
- understand the legal steps involved in a renewable energy project;
- understand the methods for presenting cases and resolving disputes in the practice of environmental law and renewable energy law;
- appreciate the interaction between environmental law and renewable energy law with other areas of the law;

Additional Information (Assessment) The Environmental and Renewable Energy Law elective is assessed by continuous assessment. Students will receive a percentage mark for the whole course. «br /»

30% is based on performance in the 6 workshops. 70% is based on two written assessments.
Feedback Feedback is provided to student in various forms. Students will receive verbal feedback from tutors on in-class presentations, general comments on class assignments when these are handed back in class and, in general, on class performance, mainly looking at the class as a whole. Students also receive specific written feedback on assignments, where necessary.

Additional Class Delivery Information Six workshops, each lasting three hours over weeks 1-6 of the course.

In the final week of the course, students complete self-led learning in the form of a field trip and research paper.
