| Summary | Year 1 of the MBChB programme will provide you with an understanding of health, disease and wellbeing and how these are affected by society and the wider environment. The course will give an understanding of research methods and interpretation of scientific information. This knowledge will be integrated with common diseases and will also introduce core professional values and ethical principles. |
| Course description |
The course will cover Body in Motion, Sustaining Life, Integrity and Principals of Pharmacology. This knowledge will be integrated with clinical practice.
Socio-ethical Aspects of Medicine (SEAM) will cover social determinants of illness, meaning of illness, experience of illness, medical ethics, public health and health improvement.
Research and Evidence Based Medicine (REBM) will cover understanding information, the role of evidence-based medicine, hypothesis driven and hypothesis free research, types of data, evaluating interventions, critical appraisal and communication of research.
Professional Skills will cover importance of communication, empathy, compassion and wellbeing.
The course content is delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials, online resources and in person sessions. Clinical and communication skills sessions and Problem Based Learning will also be used to explore more deeply both knowledge and approach to learning. You will also undertake community based practicals.

| Additional Costs | Travel to community placements will be required. The Medical School provides a small subsidy to help with these costs but they do not cover the full expenditure. Students will also need access to a smart device or laptop to submit course work. Student will be required to purchase a stethoscope from Year 2. |

| Additional Information (Assessment) |
This is a year- long assessed course. All students in Year 1 must undertake and pass Semester 1 and 2 Knowledge Tests (online examinations). The Knowledge Tests in Semester 1 and 2 will consist of questions with both single best answers and very short answer questions. Results from summative assessment 1 and 2 and an Anatomy exam will be combined to make a single score, and the definitive pass level will be determined on this score. Failure at this point would lead to exclusion from the MBChB programme.
There will be 3 essays in Socio-ethical Aspects of Medicine which must be passed.
Group projects: Student selected components are group projects which must be passed.
Professionalism: Students should aim for 100% attendance and engagement and professional behaviour must be maintained in order to progress. |
| Feedback |
Feedback will be provided after each progress test and students will receive written feedback on strengths, weaknesses and areas of improvement. Feedback will be provided on overall performance, as well as specific domains within each knowledge test including areas of knowledge and skills. |
