| Summary | As an integral part of the MEng degree programme, studentsundertake a six months (minimum) placement starting January/early February of 4th year. In line with expectations from the IMechE, theplacement must allow the student to undertakedegree relevant graduate level engineering work in either a company or at an overseas research institution/government research lab.
The nature of the work the students do can vary enormously. In an industrially based placement, the host company may allocate one major project during the placement, a different piece of work everyday or anything in between. In a placement at an overseas researchinstitution, students are usually presented with a substantial research-based project and expected to develop this project within the constraints of the accepted practices of the institution in which they are working. During the placement students will reflect on their development from student to professional engineer and consider the wider operating conditions of the host.
Support in finding a placement is provided by the School ofEngineering Placement Team and by the University Careers Service, however, the student is responsible for securing the placement.
Placement approval requires:
- Approval of the work that will be undertaken at the hostorganisation
- Completion of a Risk Assessment
- Engagement with the University¿s Study and Work AwayService if travelling abroad
- Securing university travel insurance if required
- Attendance at the pre-departure meeting |
