SummaryModern manufacturing methods rely heavily on 3D computer models of component geometry. This course teaches real world techniques for producing such geometry in challenging situations. Generating 3D geometry by reverse engineering (from 2D drawings and from 3D laser scanned data) and generating complex geometries suitable for the latest manufacturing methods (eg 3D printing) will be covered.
Course description The course is based around 4 main activities, each of which will highlight an aspect of state-of-the-art 3D modelling. It is based on individual mini-project based work packages each contributing 25% of the final mark. It is taught by a combination of short lectures, self-worked tutorials, exercises and by supplementary reading from notes and personal research. The emphasis is on supervised student-centred self learning.

3 Design for manufacture - 3D printing
4 Communicating design information - BS8888, 3D tolerancing

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Carry out reverse modelling processes for typical 3D parts;
  2. Understand how to create complex geometries using generative methods;
  3. Use and analyse design techniques suitable for manufacturable parts;
  4. Understand the different methods of communicating product information.
