SummaryThis course will introduce students to the variety of research methods used in the study of music. These may include: transcription and editing from a number of different historical periods and from recordings; archival research; the use of fieldwork and interviewing techniques; empirical research methods and experimental design; researching music for performance and the writing of programme notes; guidance on the design and preparation of a dissertation, a creative portfolio or a performance.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Understanding Music History 1: Critical Approaches to Art Music in Europe, c800-1800 (MUSI08084) OR Understanding Music History 2: The Idea of Western Art Music from Romanticism to the Late Twentieth Century (MUSI08082)

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Be aware of a variety of research methodologies in use in the study of music, their benefits and their limitations
  2. Apply at least two different approaches to music research during the course
  3. Be able to select and apply methodologies they judge to be appropriate to a particular research question
  4. Be able to evaluate self-critically the success (or otherwise) of the approach selected
