| Summary | Course Aims:
This course aims to support students to develop a critical appraisal of some of the theories of leadership and management and to apply these to the health care environment.
Intended audience:
The course will focus on leadership within healthcare settings, so is ideal for students who would like to develop a good theoretical understanding of leadership and management for their professional development.
Course content and relationship to programme and subject area:
This course will include a critical analysis of current and past examples of leadership theories and leadership research. Different styles of leadership will be explored and students will be expected to reflect on their own style and the internal and external factors which have shaped this. The impact of leadership style on patient care will also be a focus. Concepts such as leadership and teamwork and leadership and management will also be explored and students encouraged to critically analyse their own areas of practice.

Course Aims:
This course aims to support students to develop a critical appraisal of some of the theories of leadership and management and to apply these to the health care environment.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Understand and be able to critically evaluate the various theories of leadership with particular emphasis on those which are favoured in the health care arena;
2. Demonstrate an extensive, detailed, and critical knowledge and understanding of the main theoretical perspectives that inform developments at the forefront of current thinking on leadership within health care;
3. Understand the differences between leadership and management;
4. Understand the dynamics of team membership, how to develop your role and the importance of building and sustaining professional networks.
Course Structure:
How this course is delivered
Lectures will be delivered online over 10-week period whilst active learning activities will be delivered on campus. The first session will be an introduction to leadership and the following topics will be covered across the teaching sessions:
Leadership theories
Issues of gender and leadership
The differences between leadership and management
Theories and approaches to teamwork and networking
Clinical leadership in the health care environment
Leadership in education
There will be on campus tutorials and/or seminars on a fortnightly basis to consolidate learning. Students would be encouraged to meet weekly and participate via study circles. The final session will guide students to critically reflect on what they have learned in the course and discuss personal approaches to leadership.
