SummaryThis course is third in a group of 3 courses which make up the PG Certificate. Once all 3 are completed, practitioners will be able to recognise, access and manage the ill or injured children, based on sound and current evidence.
Course description This course covers the following:

Ethical considerations in emergency medicine
Recognition and management of child abuse as it presents to the emergency department
An exploration of the theoretical basis of paediatric resuscitation

The course follows a problem-based approach. Weekly exercises and discussion board topics allow the student to search for evidence regarding best practice; and present the information in a structured manner following standard scientific writing.

An end-of-term assignment allows the student to explore a topic chosen from a list and present this as a PowerPoint presentation.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Fundamentals in Paediatric Emergency Medicine 1 (PECM11001) AND Fundamentals in Paediatric Emergency Medicine 2 (PECM11002)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand the theoretical framework underpinning current practice in paediatric emergency medicine (knowledge and understanding)
  2. Analyse the literature to enable developments in knowledge to be implemented in the clinical setting (apply knowledge)
  3. Understand the pathophysiological basis of illness and injury, and apply the therapies available to help restore homeostasis (making judgement)
  4. Present cogent arguments for a chosen line of treatment based on analysis of the available evidence (communication skills)
  5. Identify learning needs and how to address these, to facilitate their own personal professional development (learning skills)
