Postgraduate Course: Comparative and Evolutionary Genomics (PGBI11115)

Course Outline
SchoolSchool of Biological Sciences CollegeCollege of Science and Engineering
Credit level (Normal year taken)SCQF Level 11 (Postgraduate) AvailabilityNot available to visiting students
SCQF Credits10 ECTS Credits5
SummaryThe course covers automated delimitation of gene/protein families, phylogeny reconstruction, and applications of phylogeny such as detecting adaptive evolution within gene sequences and inference of horizontal gene transfer. These are typical analyses that might be performed once several related genomes have been sequenced and annotated. The course uses a flipped-classroom approach, where students work through recorded lectures and other materials for the week, in advance (asynchronously, online). This preparation is crucial to make the most of the live (synchronous) weekly classes, which consist of an in-person question and answer session and an in-person tutorial. Materials and classes are supplemented by online exercises and two in-course assessments.
Course description The course covers theoretical and practical aspects of computational phylogeny and computational comparison of genomes.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Co-requisites
Prohibited Combinations Other requirements There is no formal pre-requisite for this course. However, students must have experience of the Linux command-line. This may be obtained, for example, by taking Bioinformatics Programming and System Management (PGBI11095) in Semester 1 or by previous experience.
