SummaryThis course considers modern digital manufacturing processes in depth, in particular additive manufacture (AM) and computer aided manufacture (CAM). Typically, both AM and CAM begin with a computer model of the intended geometry, but there are a range of distinct techniques available to the manufacturing engineer in order to realise this design.
Course description A combination of technical lectures, guest speakers and practical manufacturing experience will be employed to allow students to make informed decisions regarding the selection and effective implementation of digital manufacturing approaches. An indicative list of topics covered is given below:

Design for Manufacture

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Recognise a range of AM/CAM processes and critically examine the constraints and benefits of adopting a particular approach.
  2. Discuss the links between manufacturing and materials' performance.
  3. Discuss the principals of design for manufacture with AM/CAM.
  4. Generate numerical control programs for manufacture.
