SummaryThis course is a continuation and extension of the Additive and Computer Aided Manufacturing course taught in Semester 1. It will give students the opportunity to gain a deeper, more focused understanding of metal additive manufacturing. Practical experience will be combined with theoretical lectures to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to implement and enhance the use of metal AM in a production or research environment. The high level of supervision required to ensure novice users can safely use metal additive manufacturing will necessitate limits on student numbers.
Course description Teaching will consist of technical lectures alongside supervised practical activities where students are able to get experience of using a metal AM system. The activities will be structured to enable a short research effort to be conducted over the semester, with students using the taught material to inform their experimental design and evaluation. Lectures will cover a range of topics including:
- Current state of the art metal AM processes
- Energy (laser/electron) beam physics and matter interaction
- Hazards and risk assessment for metal AM
- Post AM processing (heat treatments, surface finishing)
- Implementing safe modifications to the AM process
- Evaluation of AM materials' properties
- Processing-structure-properties relationships

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Discuss in depth the current state of the art, opportunities and limitations of metal AM
  2. Discuss the links between processing, structure and properties in metal AM
  3. Recognise hazards and minimise risks during metal AM
  4. Implement an experimental program to evaluate the effect of manufacturing parameters on component properties
