SummaryAn introduction to the Latin language for complete beginners and those with limited recent experience of the language. A thorough grounding is provided in the essentials of Latin accidence (nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs) and in the syntax of the simple sentence.
Course description This course aims to teach complete beginners the basics of Latin grammar to enable them to read straightforward Latin by the end of the semester. The course, therefore, moves at a very fast pace. The class meets for 4 hours each week, and in addition there are 6 tutorials during the semester.

Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Latin 1Ha (LATI10017)
Other requirements Students with any previous experience in Latin must speak to Course Organiser before enrolling and may only be able to take this course on an audit basis.
Students on programmes for which the course is a core element will be given priority if the course is oversubscribed.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. use a vocabulary of essential Latin words and phrases;
  2. master essential Latin morphology;
  3. recognise and analyse essential Latin syntactical constructions;
  4. independently understand and translate previously unseen passages of Latin involving a range of essential vocabulary, grammar and syntax;
  5. with the use of a dictionary and other aids, understand and translate more complex passages of Latin.
