SummaryThe course seeks to examine, from an ethnological stance, the presentation and consumption of Scottish cultural tradition through an exploration of heritage as both concept and industry. Using a number of thematic case studies, students will be encouraged to critically deconstruct the term 'heritage' and consider its role in the creation and maintenance of local and national identities.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. demonstrate engagement with scholarly literature relating to the concept of heritage;
  2. demonstrate an empirical familiarity with the historical development of the heritage industry within Scotland;
  3. demonstrate a critical awareness of the aims, objectives and practices of the key institutions within the Scottish heritage industry;
  4. demonstrate enhanced ethnological research skills through focused engagement with both exhibition- and web-based materials;
  5. show competence in transferable skills, e.g. critical evaluation of source material, independent reading, coherent and clearly structured writing, oral presentation, group discussion, time management.
