| Summary | This core course aims to provide students with the potential uses of stem cells with respect to the scientific questions to be answered in specific neurodegenerative diseases. Students will learn from real-life examples such as the use of mesenchymal stem cell transplants into MS patients or iPSc derived neurones for Parkinson's Disease treatments. |
| Course description |
This course will cover potential uses of stem cells with respect to the scientific questions to be answered in specific neurodegenerative diseases.
Importantly students will learn about clinically relevant outcome measures and also some of the caveats that need to be considered when thinking about clinical trials
Students will be taught by lectures that will be made available online as the course progresses, introducing students to the new topics in order. Furthermore discussion boards and other online activities such as quizzes and puzzles will be used to keep students engaged and to reiterate the key learning outcomes for specific material. Therefore students would have a weekly block of material consisting of 1 hour of lectures (block material dependent) alongside ongoing discussion boards and reading students should be studying and researching independently and continuously.
Likely assessments utilised to monitor students progression will be:
a) Ongoing assessment of individual students interactions with discussion boards throughout the course
b) A written piece with students having a choice from topics covering stem cells, their uses and specific disease scenarios
