SummaryThis course will provide students with knowledge of the anatomical, physiological, pharmacological and ethological differences which are of importance for anaesthetic management. Species covered in lecture material will include cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, lamas and alpacas.
Course description The course will support students in developing knowledge of anaesthesia in cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, lamas and alpacas. Relevant aspects of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and ethology will be covered, allowing application of such knowledge to the application of anaesthetics in commercial, laboratory and zoological contexts.

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements Student must have progressed from certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia/ or be enrolled on an appropriate clinical MSc programme (DVetMed/ small animal practice).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Be able to discuss the species-specific elements of peri-anaesthetic management in cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, lamas and alpacas.
  2. Be able to compare different techniques in anaesthesia and analgesia for the above species.
  3. Be able to critically review the published evidence concerning anaesthesia in these species.

The course reading list will provided in the course outline on LEARN. In addition weekly journal articles relevant to the weeks learning material will in included.

Additional Class Delivery Information The course will run over 5 weeks, with approximately 5 hours study time per week (25 hours total time) comprising of pre-recorded lectures, discussion forum participation, textbook chapters and journal articles.
