SummaryThis course considers the science that underpins the commercial incubation of poultry eggs and the application of that science to maximise hatchling quality. The course will provide background knowledge and enable the critical evaluation of incubation processes.
Course description Week 1: Introduction to incubation
Week 2: Embryogenesis
Week 3: Incubation and hatching
Week 4: Egg quality and chick quality
Week 5: Best commercial practice, calculating hatchability.

Using the discussion board, discuss how to investigate a hatchery problem.

1) MCQs (30%)
2) From a case study, investigate a problem in a hatchery, and describe possible causes (65%)
3) Participate in weekly discussion boards throughout the course (5%)
Feedback Students will receive written feedback, a mark for the dissertation, and a mark overall for the MSc degree.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate extensive and detailed knowledge of the process of embryo-genesis in poultry from fertilisation to hatch in the context of commercial incubation (1)
  2. Apply knowledge, skills and understanding using a range of skills, techniques, or practices associated with poultry embryology and incubation, in order to make informed decisions/recommendations (2)
  3. Apply critical analysis and synthesis to the science and practice of commercial incubators (3)
  4. Communicate, using appropriate methods and resources, to a specific audience in relation to poultry embryology and incubation (4)
