An alternative appropriate course may be substituted only with the permission of the Programme Director

Compulsory courses

Bioinformatics Programming and System Management

Must be taken during Semester 1

Statistics and Data Analysis

Must be taken during Semester 1

Research Proposal (Bioinformatics)

Must be taken during Semester 2

MSc Dissertation (Bioinformatics)

Must be passed at 50% and taken during Block 5 (Sem 2) and beyond

Course options

NOTE: If a student wishes to take a course not listed below, then they should contact the Programme Director to discuss.

You may take ONE of the following non-SBS courses:
- INFR11211 Applied Machine Learning (Semester 1)
- MATH11205 Machine Learning in Python (Semester 2)
To take any of these three machine learning courses you must have experience with linear algebra, basic calculus, stats, and programming. If you are interested in these courses, then please just email the Programme Director (al.ivens@ed.ac.uk) to discuss your experience.

For MSc Bioinformatics students, the following courses cannot be taken as "Class Only":

BITE11004 Metagenomics (Semester 2)
PGBI11130 Biological Structure and Drug Function (Semester 2)
