Science, Technology and the Environment 4 (ED1114)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : EDU-4-STE

This half-course option builds on work covered in ES1 and ES2. Students' ideas about the nature of Environmental Studies is extended and their knowledge is developed and applied in practical contexts. The concept of energy is regarded as a permeating feature of the course. Energy changes, evident in familiar artifacts, everyday domestic appliances and childrens' toys, are used to illustrateboth conversion and conservation and to explore how children and teachers might make appropriate use of language to support conceptual development. Energy is also addressed from biological and ecological perspectives, linking with the broad theme of relationships between society, science, technology and sustainability. The course will also address pedagogical matters such as the application of constructivist approaches to science learning and teaching, the synthesis of elements across Environmental Studies, the use of simulation, role-play, relationships with other curriculum areas and with language in particular.
