Accounting and Finance (P01000)

The course aims to provide students with an understanding of modern Accounting and Finance and the construction and utilisation of both financial and management accounting information. Students will appreciate how Accounting underpins the enterprise and an understanding of Finance as a means of ascertaining and transforming the enterprise's risk and return profile and will learn how to present and critically assess Accounting and Finance and review their shortcomings

? Pre-requisites : Normally participation in Management Development 1: Personal Effectiveness and Learning Technology course code P00997

? Costs : Most costs are included in the programme fee, though some communication costs will be borne by the students

? Additional Class Information : e-course with 6hrs streamed lectures; 4hrs Question & Answer sessions; 15hrs moderated tutorials/discussions; 10hrs; structured activities; 30hrs multi media instruction; and 35hrs individual study, including assignments

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students should be able to:
- display an understanding of Accounting and Finance and the techniques introduced in the course
- identify how Accounting and Finance relate to other management functions in the enterprise
- construct and utilise financial and accounting information for planning, management and communication
- analyse and critically assess the shortcomings of the introduced models and techniques

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed through a multiple choice assessment accounting for 40% throughout the course, an individual briefing paper accounting for 40% and a group project, including an electronic log of progress, accounting for 20%
