This course will examine topics in the history of modern philosophy. Philosophers studied are likely to include Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Berkeley, Locke, and Hume. The topics studied will be those central to the work of these philosophers: substance, mind, causation, and God.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will be familiar with the work of several modern philosophers, and understand the major trends in thought over this period.

Students will also develop their general philosophical skills, in particular their ability to read and interpret historical texts.
