History of Modern Philosophy (PP0070)

The course discusses the works of a number of major figures in the history of modern Philosophy, normally including Locke, Leibniz, Hume, Kant and Schopenhauer.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- To comprehend the ideas of some of the greatest of modern philosophers
- To identify and articulate problems in the interpretation of the writings of major philosophical thinkers
- to grasp and analyze central themes in the history of modern philosophy
- to develop and examine arguments for and against the views defended by the philosophers under consideration
- to relate the philosophising of the historical authors with that of contemporary philosophers
- to develop further the philosophical skills acquired in previous philosophy courses
- to extend as well as deepen the philosophical knowledge acquired in previous philosophy courses

Assessment Information

Assessment will be by a 3 hour examination in the May diet
