EU Criminal Law (P02280)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : LAW-P-P02280 This course introduces students to that part of EU Justice and Home Affairs law which deals with Criminal Law. After an initial introduction to the evolving institutions and competences of EU criminal law and the constitutional principles which underpin EU criminal law, the course concentrates on the development of general harmonisation and mutual recognition measures developed under the Treaty on European Union, and finally on specific areas such as terrorism, organised crime, human trafficking, and corruption. ? By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- discuss and critically analyse the idea of the European Union as an 'area of freedom, justice and security', in particular in respect to the evolution of EU criminal law; - understand and assess EU policy in relation to police and criminal justice cooperation; - draw links between EU policy and relevant conceptual ideas and frameworks such as 'securitisation' and 'security'; the idea of 'Europe'; social inclusion and exclusion; the rule of law, justice and human rights; citizenship.
