Meta-Ethics (PP0092)

This course is a survey of 20th century metaethics. We will discuss moral ontology, epistemology, and semantics. Topics include: non-naturalism, naturalism, error-theory, expressivism, and response-dependence analyses. Students should gain a general overview of the subject as well as some exposure to some of the most recent developments.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

A thorough understanding of the most important positions in contemporary meta-ethics, some of which students will have encountered in less depth in previous courses, others of which will be new to students; an enhancement of philosophical skills, through pursuing contemporary questions at an advanced level; a furthering of communications skills, through presentations and constructive argument in a seminar setting.

Assessment Information

Assessment will be by 2-hour examination in the June diet. Senior Honours students may opt to write a long essay (approximately 5000 words) in lieu of the final exam.
