From Bronze to Iron: The Mediterranean in the Later 2nd Millennium BC (U00208)

The course deals with evidence for the exploitation, procurement and consumption of metals and other materials in a period of major transitions. It examines the role of trade amongst palace-oriented societies and adjacent social systems in the Mediterranean regions; the collapse of many of those organisational systems at the end of the Late Bronze Age, as epitomised in studies of the Sea Peoples; and the ensuing social and political patterns that emerged with the change of the millennia.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Archaeology 2A and 2B Visiting students must have prior study providing general background in prehistoric or proto-historic archaeology.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

A knowledge and understanding of the development of western attitudes to other other cultures; the manner in which interdisciplinary studies can lead to much richer reconstructions; and early human developments in the Near East and Mediterranean regions.

Assessment Information

Coursework (essay) 40%, Examination (2 hour paper) 60%.
