Social Psychology (U00582)

The course aims to provide an up to date review of some important developments in contemporary social psychology and adolescent psychology, to consider the application of social psychology, and to encourage critical thinking about identity and other social psychological phenomena.

The course has the following objectives. To examine both classic and modern models of prejudice and stereotyping, the consequences of prejudice and stereotyping for their 'targets', and cases of prejudice and stereotyping in the 'real world'. To examine the current state of knowledge regarding the utility of eyewitness testimony and models of jury decision making, perceptions of justice and factors affecting death penalty judgements. To discuss various approaches to issues concerning adolescent identities, and to illustrate them with respect to developing and maintaining ethnic, delinquent, sexual and subcultural identities. To introduce social constructionist and discursive approaches to identities and to show how they have been applied to masculinities, national identities, and to discuss whether aspects of postmodernity have brought about changes in identities.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you should be able to:
- describe and evaluate classic and more recent studies of and explanations for prejudice and stereotyping;
- describe and evaluate social psychology's contributions to the law (specifically in relation to the topics outlined above);
- explain and compare different approaches to identity;
- outline relevant research and to discuss critically at least one of the following topics:
- two identities relevant to adolescence
- national identities
- postmodern identities
- masculinities.
