Architectural History: Independent Study (U00842)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : ACE-3-AHIStudy

The 20-credit Independent Study enables students to pursue or acquire special interests in Architectural History, Theory of Architecture and Historiography of Architecture. With the agreement of their tutor, who becomes their supervisor for the purposes of this Option, the student makes a self-directed study whose resources with be either a material architectural fabric, secondary or primary literature, or archival material. Its method will be theoretical, archival, bibliographical or archaeological . Other approaches are also possible. The student will carry out a agreed project along one of these paths to produce an analytical essay or report.

Entry Requirements

? This course is not available to visting students.

? Pre-requisites : AH2A & 2B; or Honours entry to History of Art or its combined degrees; or Honours entry to BMus (Music) or by agreement of the Head of Subject Area

? Prohibited combinations : This course may not be combined with Architectural History Work Placement (U00913), if taken in 3rd year.

? Costs : materials and processes in preparation of report

? Delivery Period : Full Year (Blocks 1-4)

? Contact Teaching Time : 1 hour(s) per week for 11 weeks

? Additional Class Information : Self-directed study guided by weekly tutorial. Can be taken in either semester 1 or semester 2.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The student will:
Deepen their knowledge and understanding of a particular area of study

Develop their skills in the particular approach they have chosen to pursue.

Demonstrate an ability to produce a sustained body of work that is analytical and well structured

Demonstrate familiarity with the methodology and literature of architectural history

Assessment Information

An essay of 5-6,000 words or a report of 8-10,000 words
