Methodology of History 1 (VS1) (U02285)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : HCA-3-VS1-MHCTH

The aim of the course is to identify and distinguish the principal varieties of historical discourse, and modes of historical explanation, within the western, Judaeo/Christian - classical tradition, from its origins to the present. A particular concern is to explore the unique dynamism and tensions which have powered the evolution of western historiography, within social and cultural contexts. Covering such a huge span, the course concentrates on particular themes and periods. Mr Edwards deals with Judaeo-Christian and classical origins, Dr Brown with the medieval chronicle genre and its transformation, the latter and Dr Mackenney with the Renaissance, Mr Edwards with 18th and 19th -century historians, and Dr Mackenney with the Annales school and its repercussions. The course is particularly valuable because it encourages students to evaluate their other historical studies in the light of this introduction to historical thought. In the course they sample works by the 'great historians' and form their own judgements about them. The course is taught by seminars, focused on student papers, and held by one of the participating staff, who all take part in the first and last seminar. The course handbook contains standard Departmental information, a list of seminar topics, and a bibliography. Essay topics are arranged individually with tutors. Library resources are sound. Student feedback is by means of questionnaire and individual discussion.
