Education 4: Research, Policy and Professionalism (U02855)

Education 4: Research, Policy and Professionalism is intended to offer students the opportunity to engage in an intensive study of the relationship between research and professional practice. From Year One of the programme, students will have been encouraged to develop a research disposition and will have engaged in various small-scale research activities. This course gives students the opportunity to extend their research capabilities by means of lectures and workshops with expert professionals. Students will also plan, implement and evaluate a piece of research, under the supervision of a member of School staff. This consolidation and development of their experiences aims to support students complete the transition from being research consumers to research providers.

This course will culminate in a professional conference. Attendance at the conference will provide an opportunity for students to engage in interaction with field professionals. It will also enable students to draw on their professional knowledge, skills and value stances in exploring current issues in education.

This should provide an effective finish to the course and programme as a whole, and a stimulating transition into induction.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Successful completion of Education 1A U00331 and Education 1B U00332 and Education 2A U00333 and Education 2B U00334 and Education 3 ED0980. As part of a Joint Honours programme, criteria for admission to Honours must be met.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course students will be able to:
* apply research to policy and practice by becoming a teacher researcher;
* demonstrate a critical awareness of a range of approaches to research and of the need to select an approach appropriate to the aims of a given study;
* develop an awareness of the importance of educational research in the development of reflective practice in teaching;
* analyse and discuss the theoretical basis and implications for policy and practice of a number of recent and relevant research studies in education;
* plan, implement and present the outcomes of an empirical research study carried out in the professional context of the school.
*value themselves as growing professionals by taking responsibility for their professional learning and development
*know how to adopt a reflective questioning approach to their professional practice and engage appropriately in professional enquiry and research.

Assessment Information

1. Research proposal (500 words) for the Professional Project (formative assessment)
2.Professional Project (7000 words) to be submitted as a dissertation (summative assessment)
