Old Norse Mythology (U03514)

The Central theme is the understanding and interpretation of Old Norse mythology. Students will be introduced to different types of source material as well as to the ways in which these can be used to supplement one another. The literary sources will, however, form the core material used in the course. All texts will be available in English translation. Prior knowledge of Old Norse language is NOT a requirement, but familiarity with at least one Nordic language is definitely and advantage.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide a deeper understanding of Old Norse thought world as well as the underlying religious beliefs current in the Scandinavian area from the Iron Age into the early medieval period. This also means that some attention will be given to Scandinavian society as such during the same period. The approach adopted by this course is interdisciplinary, drawing on historical, archaeological and linguistic evidence and crossing disciplines such as philology, history of religion and ethnology in order to gain a nuanced and balanced understanding of the subject area.
