Course objectives and content
The course addresses management issues of high strategic relevance in multinational firms. It provides concepts for analysing and managing international business problems, and applies this approach to a variety of multinational forms (large corporations, strategic alliances, new ventures), origins (American, Asian and European), industries and foreign markets (mostly developed but also developing). One of the course's distinguishing features is that it considers the workings of the entire multinational business, as opposed to focusing on particular functional areas. Drawing on current research, the course aims to give students practical and in-depth insights into the complex challenges that businesses face in today's global markets.

Topics covered include:
Conceptual tools and trends in key aspects of multinational firms;
environments;
Types of international strategies and conditions under which those are most effective;
Competitive rivalry in global markets;
Organisational issues in implementing international strategies;
The strategic role and management of Knowledge Management in multinationals;
Strategic issues in managing cross-border strategic alliances;
Emerging trends and issues in strategic international management including: how firms deal with strategic and organisational re-direction in dynamic global markets; global corporate citizenship

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will:

- Gain a knowledge of conceptual frameworks for examining international management issues
- Be aware of current trends and issues in advanced aspects of strategic multinational management
- Be knowledgeable of current academic debates on topical strategic international matters
- Understand the practical implications of the issues
- Develop their communication skills of complex problems, both individually and in teams

Assessment Information

Two essays (50% each) of 3000 words each
