Learner Study, during Placement (or equivalent for non-ITE students), relating Pedagogy, Curriculum/Assessment, and aspects of Social Justice to the learning, development and educational experiences of 2-4 children/learners. Future Schools challenge, requiring study of recent advances/research in Pedagogy, Curriculum/Assessment, and aspects of Social Justice and their application to current problems and future development of education.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Education 2A; Plus successful completion of Education 1A U00331 and Education 1B U00332 (unless student can demonstrate appropriate reading/experience). Applicants to this course, which involves placement, are required to complete an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland criminal record check prior to commencing studies. Applicants who do not live in the UK are required to provide equivalent certification such as a certificate of good conduct from the authorities in the country concerned. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The student should be able to:
- evaluate the impact of teaching, curriculum, and the relationship between schools and other life experiences to the learning and development of different children/learners;
- understand some current issues of social and cultural change and their implications for educational policy and practice;
- show development of a personal critical perspective on current practice, relating to social problems and values framework;
- show development of some proposals for educational improvement, drawing on recent policy change and international examples of good practice;
- have enhanced professional skills of organising and managing learning.

Assessment Information

A single assessment, based on two activities, equally weighted:
1) Learner Study - individual written report (2000 words)
2) Group oral presentation, with visual display, of proposals for a Future School.
Both presentations must include reference to curriculum & assessment, teaching & learning, and schools & social justice
As a course requirement, students will be expected to maintain a reflective commentary on their reading, reflection, responses to lectures, and observations. In extreme cases, to resolve a problem in group assessment, this reflective commentary, a short viva, and/or some writing under supervision may be used as supplementary evidence in reaching a final grade. Students will be required to gain a mark of at least 40% on each assessment, as well as a final (aggregate) mark of at least 40% to pass the course, in accordance with the common marking scheme.
