Course descriptionThis course considers the professional and ethical nature of psychiatric nursing practice. The course is based on reflective practice. Topics covered include the role of the psychiatric nurse, history of psychiatric nursing, ethics of restraint.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Nursing 1 (NUST08001) AND Nursing 2 (NUST08006) AND Health and Society 1A (NUST08002) AND Health and Society 1B (NUST08003) AND Health and Society 2A (NUST08004) AND Health and Society 2B (NUST08005) AND Research and Inquiry in Nursing (NUST10007) AND The Nature of Nursing (NUST10012) AND Pathology and Patient Care (NUST10013) AND Organisation and Management of Health Care (NUST10014) OR The Nature of Mental Health Nursing (NUST10017) AND Therapeutics and Patient Care (NUST10016) AND Politics and Management of Mental Illness (NUST10015)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To promote discussion and debate amongst the students.
To develop presentation skills.
To increase the analytical and ciritcal thinking skills of the students.
To develop shared learning skills.
To introduce the students to areas of debate within psychiatric nursing.

Either two course papers of 2,500-3,000 words OR one long course paper of 4000 - 4500 words.
