Learning Outcomes
This course will give a broad, integrated overview of the geochemical principles underpinning mantle evolution and igneous petrogenesis. It builds on knowledge and understanding gained in year 3 and is supplemented by requisite reading. Students will learn how to produce numerical simulation of trace element behaviour as well as becoming familiar with:
1. Mantle composition, melting processes, melt extraction
2. Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes and mantle evolution
3. Trace element behaviour during partial melting and fractional crystallisation
An Excel based modelling exercise will allow students to practise in a professional level context and they are expected to critically interpret the outcome. The accompanying report will demonstrate their detailed, critical understanding. Students will gain an appreciation of the complexity of igneous geochemistry through this course.
