| Summary | This workshop provides first-year history PhD students with the opportunity to offer research-in-progress papers to an audience largely composed of peers; to test how effectively they are communicating their research findings in written form; to learn how to respond effectively to feedback; and to offer constructive feedback on the work of others. |
| Course description |
Each student will submit a twenty-page paper for presentation and discussion; this paper does not need to be written especially for this class, and deliver a 15-20 minute presentation, based solely on her or his reading of that paper. Another member of the group will provide a 10-minute response to this paper, which will be followed by general discussion. The aim of this exercise is to develop oral presentation skills and the ability to offer helpful feedback in a scholarly and professional manner. Since everyone present will have read the paper in advance, presenters are encouraged to give a less formal presentation, spoken rather than read, which reflects on the aims and contents of the pre-circulated paper rather than simply reading it out. Commentators should critically evaluate the pre-circulated paper, drawing attention to major strengths and weaknesses, suggesting possible ways forward, and raising questions for further discussion.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a detailed and critical command of the body of knowledge concerning in the field of their doctoral research
- Demonstrate an ability to analyse and reflect critically upon scholarship concerning their chosen field of research, as well as relevant primary source materials and conceptual discussions
- Demonstrate in an ability to understand and apply specialised research or professional skills, techniques and practices considered in their chosen field of research
- Demonstrate the ability to develop and sustain original scholarly arguments in oral and written by independently formulating appropriate questions and utilising relevant evidence
- Demonstrate in seminar discussions, their written submission, and their presentations originality and independence of mind and initiative; intellectual integrity and maturity; an ability to evaluate the work of others, including peers; and a considerable degree of autonomy
