Summary | This course will develop a design topic and associated site, as self-selected by the student, based on their previously gathered research. Through a transparent iterative process, they will formulate a final design solution for their chosen site. They will then focus in detail on a major space within their scheme, developing the area in detail, to a level that demonstrates a professional understanding of materials, to a recognised construction industry level of information. |
Course description |
This course involves students using their brief, site and topic research (as established in course Interior Design 4A) to developing design proposals, resulting in a final scheme proposal.
Students will gain an understanding of information required to successfully present design information at outline scheme design stage to scale. It will comply to the regulations as set out in the Scottish Building Standards for fire escape, stairs and ramps, and toilets. Final scheme should also meet recognized Government regulations for disabled access.
They will then focus in on one area of the scheme and develop and detail it to a much more advanced level, to include construction level drawings to scale. Students will learn about specifying of materials and detailing of interior elements. They will develop their final proposals in drawn and model form.

Sketchbook(s) of design development process including outline design esquisse sketches.
Package of drawings (A3-A1 size) of proposed interior design solution, main space, strategies and details including plans and sections to scale of proposals.
Associated 3D models of proposals and details.

All three Learning Outcomes are equally weighted in the components of assessment. |
Feedback |
Formative feedback and Assessment:
Group presentations and crits constitute verbal feedback from peers and staff on a weekly basis.
At the end of semester 1 students will submit a self-evaluation form, and be given written formative feedback and grades on their work to date.
Summative Feedback and Assessment:
Following the final portfolio submission at the end of semester 2, each student will submit a self-evaluation form and receive written feedback and grades on their summative work.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Initiate and evaluate a response to research findings through a series of creative interior design concepts based on critical assessment.
- Develop the design of the interior design project through a structured, transparent and personal methodology and considered judgement.
- Resolve the design of the interior design project through a transparent iterative process that shows appropriate material development to a professional standard that demonstrates an integrated relationship between theory, practice and industry.
