Summary | This course will investigate in depth a design topic and associated site, both self-selected by the students, using a variety of research methods. It will develop a professionally focused approach to the early design stage of a major project and look at different ways to discover, evaluate and present the information, along with the formation of a project brief. |
Course description |
This course involves students selecting their own site and topic for investigation as an interior design project. They will be required to investigate the history of their chosen site, including existing and previous uses and any design proposals both past and present.
Students will also be required to propose a new use for the site, and support this use with research relating to current thinking on that topic, relevant statistics, interviews, ethnographic investigations etc. They should also undertake extensive research into relevant precedent studies both in relation to proposed use and building type. Students will collate and edit all research to produce a design briefing document and also a conservation statement. Students will be required to demonstrate an understanding of the site's structure and servicing through review of drawings and creation of structural models and relevant diagrams/strategies.

100% weighting for research portfolio to include:
Research sketchbook(s) detailing all research information gathered and investigated in relation to site, building precedents and function.
Drawings to scale (A3 - A1 size depending on scale) showing existing building, material investigations and samples relating to interior design solution and main space.
Conservation statement (A4 size minimum 10 pages).
Relationship between Assessment and Learning Outcomes:
All three Learning Outcomes are equally weighted in the components of assessment.

Feedback |
Formative feedback and Assessment:
Group presentations and crits constitute verbal feedback from peers and staff on a weekly basis.
At the end of semester 1 students will submit a self-evaluation form, and be given written formative feedback and grades on their work to date.
Summative Feedback and Assessment:
Following the final portfolio submission at the end of semester 2, each student will submit a self-evaluation form and receive written feedback and grades on their summative work.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Undertake a variety of research methods in the process of rigorously investigating personal research themes, showing a clear development of research inquiry that challenges established precepts and assumptions of interior design.
- Demonstrate an application of knowledge in relation to an in depth investigation of a site that supports a comprehensive understanding of its nature.
- Analyse and develop relevant research findings in an original and creative way to formulate a design brief.
