Summary | This post-introductory course is intended for students who have successfully completed Foundation Korean Language 3 or have reached an equivalent standard (Standard Grade/TOPIC - Test of Proficiency in Korean, Korean Language written test for non-native speakers under the Ministry of Education in Republic of Korea). It is not suitable for absolute beginners or students with knowledge of Korean at Highers/A-level or above. This course runs in semester 2.
All students take all elements of assessment, including the examination. Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed. |
Course description |
In this course students will develop Korean Language skills to intermediate level where they could engage in conversation on the topics explained below. The lectures will be taught in larger groups, while separate tutorials will entail smaller groups. In the tutorials, students will be able to practice speaking and writing. Classes will be conducted in an interactive manner, combining PowerPoint presentations by the instructor and role play among students. You will learn how to comprehend and compose short to relatively long essays in Korean.
The following list is a description of the contents of the course. Along with each topic and function, relevant vocabulary, grammatical and textual structures, and culture notes will be introduced.
Describing people's physical attributes (looks and clothes) and behaviors.
Looking at situations and guessing what is going on.
Informal suggestions between friends for things to do together.
Talking about family and describing personality.
Comparing present and past.
Giving advice, making excuses and asking for help.
Asking about the past experiences of others and talking about your own past experiences.
Phrases to use in exceptional circumstances (when people are ill, are getting married, have died or need encouragement etc).
Giving personal information and expressing yourself in an interview situation.
Talking to someone you haven't seen in a while.
Students who successfully completed previous beginners and intermediate Korean Language course (Foundation Korean Language 1,2, 3) could take this course. This course will allow students to have more confident conversation particularly over those topics and achieve intermediate level of Korean language skills.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Speaking and listening: Students will be able to express themselves well in a variety of circumstances ranging between informal situations, such as talking to friends, to formal situations, such as interviews.
- Writing and reading: Students will be able to engage in understanding longer items text and producing much longer essays whilst being able to express their thinking at higher level than in previous courses.
- Cultural perspective: Students will be able to deeply understand Korean culture and be able to respond sensitively to a variety of situations that express happiness and sorrow.
- IT skills: Students will be able to search online using a Hangul keyboard and type essays comfortably in Hangul.
