| Course description |
This course offers an overview of major topics in phenomenological psychology and applications in counselling and psychotherapeutic practice. The first part of the course examines existential-phenomenological theory, current topics in phenomenological psychological research, with each class accompanied by a practicum offering experiential learning, and student-led presentations. Topics include the body, subjectivity, sociality and authenticity. The second part of the course focuses on applications of phenomenological theory to counselling and psychotherapy. Lectures will examine some core psychological processes at work in contemporary therapeutic practice. Topics include distress and disorder, theoretical orientation, technique and non-technique, and difference and diversity. Students will form into study groups of 6. Each group will be assigned a lecture topic and lead student presentations or co-facilitate a practicum. Skills developed include critical evaluation of literature, reflexivity, elucidation of complex ideas, communication and presentation skills.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of the distinctive features of phenomenological theory and phenomenological psychology.
- Evaluate concepts of embodiment, subjectivity, sociality, and the unconscious, through a phenomenological lens.
- Understand practical and theoretical aspects of the therapeutic contract and relationship.
- Evaluate different theoretical orientations and their implications for therapeutic practice.
- Formulate psychological phenomena and therapeutic practice in phenomenological terms.
