It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that students choose outside courses in first year that follow on into second year, so that there is the possibility of an alternative degree programme at the end of second year.

There are no compulsory courses in this year of this programme.

Entry requirements:
for French 1A: a pass in French at National 5 (SQA) or GCSE
for French 1B: a pass in French at Higher (SQA), A-level or equivalent
Entrants with SQA qualifications should hold at least a 'B' pass. Students with a grade B at Higher OR a 'crash' Higher OR a Higher awarded more than 1 year ago will be registered on French 1B, but may take a Diagnostic Test to gauge their ability. Depending on the results, course registration may be changed to French 1A.
AND

Level 7 and 8 courses in Schedules A-Q, T, W and Y

Notes:
Level 7 language courses cannot be taken for credits on this degree programme.

Year 2 Academic year: 2023/24, Starting in: August

Notes:
It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that students choose outside courses in second year that follow on from first year, so that there is the possibility of an alternative degree programme at the end of second year.

Entry into Honours:
(1) Students must pass courses to the required value of 240 credits in the first two years.
(2) Students must achieve 50% or more at first attempt in all required second-year courses for their registered degree.
(3) If a student achieves a pass in ELCF08012 French 2 Literature and Culture but fails to meet the 50% requirement, progression to Honours will be permitted if the student has achieved 50% or more at first attempt in ELCF08009 Politics and Institutions of Contemporary France A.
(4) All courses (including outside subjects) must be passed before embarking on the year abroad, an outside course passed at Resit in August will be acceptable.

Notes:
Nordic Languages: Diversity and Historical Developments is available to students who have taken a Scandinavian Studies language in Year 1.
Communicating across the Scandinavian Languages is available to students who have taken a Scandinavian Studies language in Year 1.
For LEL2 courses students must have passed: Linguistics and English Language 1 or A Brief Introduction to Language.

During 3rd year, when permitted, at least 30 weeks of approved residence must be spent in a French-speaking country. During sessions when this is not permitted students will be offered an alternative means of engagement.

Final Assessment:

One unit of assessment is allocated to every 20 credits and constitutes one 20-credit paper. The following are the twelve 20-credit papers on which the classification of the degree is based. ELCC10007 is a 40 credit course, and is therefore counted twice (papers 5&6)

1. French Language Paper 1 (10 credits from Language acquisition and 10 from Y4 LP1 course)
2. French Language Paper 2 (10 credits from Language acquisition and 10 from Y4 LP2 course)
3. Oral for French (taught and assessed in Y4)
4. Online Language Course for Year Abroad Students
5. MEL Year Abroad Work (ECTS or YA Essay) ELCC10007
6. MEL Year Abroad Work (ECTS or YA Essay) ELCC10007
7. MEL Dissertation Preparation (see 8)
8. MEL Dissertation Completion (Papers 7 & 8 are a combined grade 10% from preparation and 90% from final dissertation; credits cannot be awarded for Dissertation preparation unless the full 2 year course is completed)
