Notes:
Entry to Honours:

(1) Students must pass courses to the required value of 240 credits in the first two years.
(2) Students must achieve 50% or more, at the first attempt, in Arabic 2.
(3) Students must achieve 50% or more, at the first attempt, in Spanish Language 2.
(4) Students must achieve 50% or more, at the first attempt, in Literatures and Cultures of the Spanish-Speaking World 2.

All courses (including outside subjects) must be passed before embarking on the year abroad; an outside course passed at Resit in August will be acceptable.

Notes:
Politics and Institutions of Contemporary France is only available to students who have passed French 1A or French 1B.
Nordic Languages: Diversity and Historical Developments is available to students who have taken a Scandinavian Studies language in Year 1.
Communicating across the Scandinavian Languages is available to students who have taken a Scandinavian Studies language in Year 1.
For Linguistics courses students must have passed: Linguistics and English Language 1.

Year 3 Academic year: 2024/25, Starting in: August

Notes:
During 3rd year, when permitted, at least 30 weeks of approved residence must be spent in relevant countries. The minimum period of residence in the country of either language is eight consecutive weeks. During sessions when this is not permitted, students will be offered an alternative means of engagement.

Final Assessment Weighting:

One unit of assessment is allocated to every 20 credits and constitutes one 20-credit paper. The following are the twelve 20-credit papers on which the classification of the degree is based. (Papers that for the purposes of degree classification acquire a weighting of 40 credits are, therefore, listed twice.)

4. Spanish 4 Honours Language Paper 1
5. Spanish 4 Honours Language Paper 2
6. Oral for Spanish
7. Year Abroad online language learning course - Spanish
8. IMES Dissertation Part 1 or MEL Dissertation Preparation (same mark as 9)
9. IMES Dissertation Part 2 or MEL Dissertation Completion (see note below)
10. Honours option course in IMES
11. Honours option course in Spanish
12. Honours option course in IMES or Spanish

If students choose to complete their dissertation with Spanish, papers 8 and 9 will be calculated as a combined grade, as follows: 10% from MEL Dissertation Preparation and 90% from MEL Dissertation Completion. Credits cannot be awarded for the MEL Dissertation Preparation course unless the full 2 year course is completed.

'IMES option courses' are courses involving discursive studies of Islam/Middle East-related subjects with texts read in English. A list of courses is made available to students prior to the start of the new academic year, and whilst the courses offered change from year to year, they typically include subjects in history, politics, religion, or cultural studies.
